cellphone update

I noticed the LG Viewty red in a store today, so it’s finally available. But, I had decided that the viewty may not be the right choice, so had a look at the alternatives.

Examining the nokia e61i and the blackberries I came to the conclusion that these full qwerty keyboard phones are all too big and ugly for my tastes.  I noticed a nice looking samsung in a shop, with a full qwerty keyboard — but it has Windows Mobile instead of a decent OS.

However, the idea of having an actual smartphone which has 3rd party applications and an SDK available does seem very appealing.  When it comes to smartphones, there are only two operating systems (with any marketshare, currently), windows and symbian.  Symbian is more-or-less only used by Sony and Nokia.

So, I had a look at their products — and both seem to only have ugly phones at the moment, which is a bit suprising to me because Nokia was the first (if i’m not mistaken) to introduce cellphones intended to look good (think of the 2004 art deco collection and the 2005 l’amour collection).

One of the products I discovered is the Nokia 6210 Navigator.  One of the ugliest phones available ever, but atleast it’s pink and is a smartphone with built-in GPS (so it can run navigation software).  The idea of having a smartphone with GPS is interesting, I can think of some uses for that.

The other product I found is the Nokia N76, which is probably the least ugly phone Nokia has available.

Both of these do look a bit more sturdy than the more fashionable phones out there, and the symbian os is a definite advantage over what’s on the viewty. They’re about the same price-range (6210 not even available yet), but lack a touchscreen.

Still undecided.
